“China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China’s interests,” China’s Commerce Ministry said in a statement. “If this happens, China will never accept it and will resolutely take countermeasures in a reciprocal manner. China is determined and capable of safeguarding its own rights and interests.”

China said it would take “countermeasures” against countries that take trade deals with the United States that it deems to be detrimental to its interests. The Trump administration imposed a 145% tariff on China which countered with a 125% tariff on imports from the U.

While Trump has expressed optimism about agreements with Europe and China, among others, so far it’s been just that: positive comments, but no signed deals.
