The California Highway Patrol was investigating the deadly police shooting that occurred on Interstate 80 on Thursday, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol on Thursday shut down all westbound lanes of Interstate 80 in Hercules after a police officer shot and killed someone, according to two sources.

The freeway closure came after a Richmond police officer shot someone on I-80 near Highway 4, authorities said.

All westbound lanes of Interstate 80 in Contra Costa County remain closed Thursday afternoon due to police activity that began hours earlier, authorities said.

The lanes were shut down just after 7 a.m. near Hercules, officials said.
