The Trump administration reportedly started to lay off nearly 7,000 new workers from the IRS on Thursday, including many who work in enforcement. A day earlier, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Fox News that Trump’s goal is to “abolish” the IRS and replace its tax revenue with tariff cash.

Office of Community Planning and Development: The Trump administration is aiming to cut the office, an arm of the department of Housing and Urban Development, from 936 staffers to 150, or 84%, the New York Times reported, citing a document it obtained detailing the plans.

In addition to the planned layoffs, the Trump administration intends to lend IRS workers to the Department of Homeland Security to assist with immigration enforcement. In a letter sent earlier this month, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to borrow IRS workers to help with ongoing immigration crackdown efforts.
