One person is dead after a Saturday evening avalanche in northern Colorado’s Rocky Mountains near Berthoud Pass in Grand County, sheriff’s officials said.

Suse Lowenstein’s son was killed in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. An artist, she responded by creating a huge sculptural installation, Dark Elegy, depicting the raw emotion women felt the day they learned their loved ones died.

Few details were immediately available but a sheriff's office spokesperson said the avalanche was triggered around 4:45 p.m. in the "Fingers Area" on Berthoud Pass near Winter Park.
