The European Commission says the Facebook parent company is undermining rivals by embedding its classified ads platform within the social network.

The European Commission has ordered Meta to “bring the conduct effectively to an end,” but didn’t specify what actions should be taken. Meta was also hit with a record-breaking $1.3 billion fine by the EU last year for transferring the Facebook data of EU citizens to the US.

An EU commission alleged that Meta leveraged its dominance in social networking to gain an unfair advantage in online classified ads.

Meta Platforms Inc. was hit with a €798 million ($841 million) fine by European Union regulators by tying its Facebook Marketplace service the social network, the US tech giant’s first ever penalty for EU antitrust violations.

Meta said it would appeal the decision by the European Union, which said the company had abused its dominance in social networking to strengthen its shopping and classified ads service.

Meta was penalized by the EU for tying Facebook Marketplace to its social network, and for imposing unfair trading conditions on competitors.

The European Commission on Thursday fined Meta Platforms €797.72 million ($840.24 million) over abusive practices benefiting Facebook Marketplace, it said in a statement, confirming an earlier report by Reuters.

The European Commission has fined Meta $842 million for antitrust violations related to Facebook Marketplace. It said the company “abused its dominant positions” as a leader in the social networking space.
