An adult in Lafayette is the first human death of West Nile virus in Colorado this year, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Positive West Nile virus samples were found in mosquitoes from northwest, northeast, and southwest Atlanta; pest control measures are being coordinated.

In the latest weekly update of mosquito activity, Mosquito Control’s entomology lab reported that Culex tarsalis mosquitoes — the species most responsible for human transmission of West Nile virus — are active in some of the highest numbers recorded this early.
