Meet the two newest moose rescues! One comes to the AWCC from the Anchorage area, and the other is from the Kenai Peninsula. Both were orphaned after losing their moms and the AWCC has been able to provide temporary placement for them this summer. • • Come see these two little cuties while they’re still here with us! | Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

🔊 Sound on! AWCC's resident North American Porcupines, Twix, Baby Ruth, and Heath, enjoying a delicious fireweed snack. Porcupines are herbivores, and feed on the newly emerging leaves of aspen, birch, willow, and cottonwood in the spring. Fireweed, willow, roots, berries, and herbaceous plants make up the diet in summer and fall. Winter diet consists primarily of the inner bark of spruce trees or other conifers. 🎥: AWCC Naturalist Liz Adamson | Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

We hope you enjoy this highlight reel featuring the animals of the sanctuary, filmed over the last week of August. Many guests ask if you can still see the animals when it is raining, and the answer is YES! As you will see in this video montage, the animals are very active on the rainy days. AWCC is situated in Portage, which borders the northernmost temperate rainforest in the world. Coastal temperate rainforests are rare. They occur in only 6 places outside of Alaska. Located an hour south of Anchorage, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is open year-round and offers unique wildlife encounters. Come in the winter season (from October through April) for a different view of the wildlife, like the moose, wood bison, reindeer, wolves, deer, muskox, and foxes (keep in mind, the black and brown bears keep a low profile this time of year, as they can be hibernating).
