The retouching process is arguably the most fun and difficult part of any conservation. While it’s exciting to literally reassemble the image and make the damage disappear, it’s also the thing that the viewer will see first. All of the structural work is hidden and often behind the image yet the image itself is the whole point. If the retouching isn’t spot-on then no amount of other work will matter to the viewer. This painting of a canal had a pretty nasty compound tear and required a lining to

It’s always an exciting time when the varnish comes off a painting. Over the course of a painting’s life the varnish can deteriorate. Through exposure to air and light the once clear layer of natural resin can turn yellow, brown or even gray. This change begins almost instantly but at a very slow pace such that the daily viewer of a given painting may never notice. Yet once we begin to remove the varnish, wow, what a difference. It strikes me as a fundamental misunderstanding of the artistic pro

Certainly a more impactful change on this painting. Often pieces with a large quantity of dark area respond favorably to varnishing as the darks seem to get darker and more intense and by contrast the lights appear to be brighter. | Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration

The cleaning of this painting by Mathias J. Alten goes way back to 2018, before I had a beard and any concept of social media! Amazing what removing soot andngrime from a painting can yield.

We’ve all see in before on tv, in the papers and on the internet: instances where the best of intentions reault in catastrophic reaults. But what does one do when they encounter an art restoration fail… well, i fix it.

I talk a lot about how the materials and techniques I use are reversible and here is a prime example of that. I had mended a small tear using the bridging technique that I am very fond of. The client accidentally damaged the painting and now it needs to be lined. Before I can do the lining I have to remove the bridging and as you can see it’s really quite simple. | Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration

The moment of truth comes after the varnish is applied and one can check the quality of their work. The two main things to watch for are color matching as sometimes colors can shift after the varnish is applied and of course we want any retouching to look just like the painting, that is; be invisible. In addition one has to be mindful of the surface of the repair particularly if there was a tear or hole as any textural deviation will instantly reveal the conservation work even if the color match

Check out this fantastic piece. It was painted for the dust jacket of a novel and luckily the original painting survived. Over the years the original varnish discolored a bit... yellow snow... no thanks. This test window shows just how dirty this painting is! | Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration

An oldie but goodie. It often seems like there’s a debate about what retouching method to use to achieve the best results. There are many different approaches in many different theories about how much the conservator should retouch and in what manner. Ultimately however the final decision must be made in accord with the client’s wishes. That is, if the client wishes the image to be unified and the conservator chooses a method of retouching that does anything short of that, it would be considered

Retouching. The best and worst part of conservation. When everything is going well it’s an amazing feeling and time stands still. When it’s not going well, it’s miserable and never seems to end. This painting had two large tears in pretty important places and after addressing the structural issues the retouching focused on reintegrating the image. This one was challenging, delicate and exciting. With so much of the figure missing it’s harder to make the damage disappear but that challenge is wha

There are many ways to stabilize flaking paint on canvas but when it comes to paint on wood those options are limited as the only access to the voids is from the face of the artwork. That is, unlike on canvas, the adhesive can not be applied on the verso and allowed to penetrate up into the voids, rather it has to be injected. Once the solvent evaporates hot air can be used to activate the adhesive and various tools can be used to press the paint back down until the adhesive cools. Here I’m usin

This painting that made a cameo in my last YouTube video was just approved by the client 🤩. For reference, that test window is about 1” x 1 1/2” and the painting is 6’ x 9’ And you can bet your sweet behinds that this is going to be a video... it just might not be done for a while ☺️ Anyhow, if you’re in the States, the Labor Day weekend is coming; don’t do any work! And if you’re not, well you too get a weekend; enjoy it!! See y’all on Tuesday! 🍻 | Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration

Just a bit of what’s happening in the studio this morning. Putting both my hot tables to work. This is a prime example of why having the second table is so critical. Aside from having capacity to work on really large pieces, it also allows me to split the work between the two tables. On the small table I’m lining two paintings with high heat (150F) and on the large table I’m doing three treatments to flatten wavy and rippled canvas at lower heat (120F) further, because the large table has three
