The Northern Pygmy Owlet is a tiny and charming bird native to North and Central America. These small owls are known for their diminutive size and distinctive features, such as bright yellow eyes and a round head. Recently, I had the pleasure of witnessing a remarkable moment in the life of one of these owlets. The last chick was taking its first flight from the tiny cavity hole that had been its safe haven. The young owlet was visibly excited, flapping its wings with anticipation as it prepared

The Northern Pygmy Owl! This fierce little predator might be small, but it rules the treetops with its razor-sharp stare and killer hunting skills. Perched like a boss on a mossy branch, it’s here to remind us that size means nothing when you’ve got attitude and talent. Nature’s ultimate underdog just dropped the mic—who’s obsessed?! 🌿🔥 . . . . . . . . . #northernpygmyowl #pygmyowl #owlphotography #owl #owlsofinstagram #owllovers #wildlifeplanet #wildlifephotography #wildlife #wildanimals #nat

Minutes after leaving a nest and climbing a leaning tree, a Northern Pygmy-Owl explores its surroundings. Owls cannot move their eyes their sockets so instead they must rotate their heads to change their perspective. Northern Pygmy-Owls are among several North American owls that rely upon woodpecker created cavities for their nests. | Paul Bannick Photography

This Northern Pygmy-Owl appears to have eyes in the back of its head. These false eyes help protect the pygmy-owl's true eyes. Small birds will mob this diurnal owl, sometimes striking it. Most of these little birds strike at the owls eyes. The large false eyes can take the brunt of these attacks, resulting in little harm to the Pygmy Owl's true eyes. Here is some video footage I took these evening of one of these cute little owls near Grande Prairie,AB | Famous Amos Photography

Take a rare glimpse into the breeding behavior of the great plains toad (Anaxyrus cognatus), a Wyoming species of greatest conservation need. These toads are more often heard and not seen, due to their incredibly loud calls for such a small animal! This video shows how male toads produce their calls—by inflating a sac on their throat (called the vocal pouch) with air. Each summer, just after sunset, males congregate in temporary ponds on the high prairie and begin their impressive chorus. Wildli

Coyote amazingly finds a Toad in Alaska! The Western Toad is the only species of Toad, and one of very few amphibians, to inhabit this far Northern reach of the globe. In fact, amphibians are so uncommon in Alaska no one in the crew even thought finding one would be a possibility…but as always, Coyote managed to discover the most elusive creature against all odds…and all while playing Pokemon Go no less! The Wyoming toad is extremely rare and exclusive to the Cowboy State. In Wyoming, it has been designated as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need, and is currently listed under the Endangered Species Act. To help restore the endemic toad species to their native habitat in the Laramie basin, captive bred toads are released annually. Species of Greatest Conservation Need are certain species within Wyoming that warrant additional conservation attention. Wyoming has many other Species of Greatest

Our Wyoming toad tadpoles are growing up! They're starting to sprout legs and transform into tiny toadlets. At about one month old, they begin by growing their back legs first, followed by their front legs. Even though they all hatched around the same time, some tadpoles start developing legs a little sooner than others. They'll grow their back legs for a few weeks before their front legs appear. Once those front legs come in, it's only a matter of days before they hop onto dry land! Learn more
