While we’re celebrating love, native redband trout in the Spokane River are beginning their spring spawning season. Each year, they return to clean, gravelly stretches of river to build “redds” (nests) and lay their eggs. Those eggs settle into the gravel, where they’ll develop for weeks before hatching, if the habitat stays clean and undisturbed. Healthy river habitat = future native fish. #spokaneriver #valentinesday #redbandtrout #SpawningSeason #fortheriver | Spokane Riverkeeper

The Spokane River and the aquifer beneath our feet are one connected system. In the summer, groundwater from the aquifer is what keeps the river flowing. That means how we use water at home really does affect the river’s health. Every drop we save helps keep water in the river for fish, wildlife, and our community. Watch to learn from Water Protector Katelyn Scott how the aquifer and river interact — and why water conservation is river protection. #waterconservation #spokaneriver #fortheriver #r

Spokane-area district fish biologist Randy recently saw something interesting at Horseshoe Lake in Spokane County. Bullhead catfish fry often travel in large cloud-like schools of thousands of fish. Randy was sampling late last week at Horseshoe when he saw this dark mass of fry (a literal ball of fish) near the shore. Parent bullheads swim around their young in circles to keep them in these schools so they are less likely to become a snack for a predator. | Washington Department of Fish & Wildl

Local efforts to reduce pollution in the Spokane River watershed are making a splash! We’ve been working with partners across the region since 2010 to reduce excess phosphorus in the Spokane River watershed. The high levels of phosphorus in the water lead to low dissolved oxygen and increased algal blooms, which means it is difficult for fish to breathe. Algal blooms can also harm people and wildlife. What does this work look like? I’m so glad you asked! Our water cleanup plan for the Spokane Ri

If you fish Long Lake in the Spokane area, you may see WDFW boats on the water from late March through June, as we partner with Avista to expand annual efforts to remove carp from the lake in order to improve water quality. WDFW crews will also be removing northern pike due to their potential expansion into new waters and their impact on populations of other fish species. The video below explains the harmful effects both these species can have on their environment. More information on northern p
